Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant: Bangladesh's Mitochondria

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is an under constructing project of Bangladesh for sustainable energy and electricity which was launched on 30th November in 2017. It is the new hope of Bangladesh to fulfil it’s required amount of electricity as this power plant can produce about 15% of the entire country’s electricity when completed. So, this is a huge deal for the entire country and for the citizens as many areas of Bangladesh can’t get electricity because due to power shortage and the inability to afford electricity. This project has a lot of impact on Bangladesh’s economy as this single project alone is going to need a lot of money and resources to finish but at the same time it will be able to produce a lot of free space to create job sectors and opportunities for the local people around the place that the project is currently built on as well as all the people of Bangladesh.

The Struggle Behind The Project

As this is a huge project to construct and build Bangladesh has gotten some help from Russia. This project needs a lot of funds to get a physical form and unfortunately due to the financial difficulties of Bangladesh it has struggled with this project a lot and got unapproved by the government multiple times due to not having enough money, resources, technology and the safety assurance. When Bangladesh seek help to overseas, every single one of the countries denied to help. Even the international bank organization known as The World Bank which’s only purpose is to help counties with financial difficulties, rejected Bangladesh’s Help Application for the loan to give this project a reality and the most ironical part of this story is it was a Bangladeshi who suggested The World Bank to not provide the loan. Ignoring all the difficulties and breaking the concreate wall of ignorance that Bangladesh received from the world, it’s authority decided to launch the project with it’s own money anyways. But luckily Russia didn’t let down on its old friend when Bangladesh asked for help because Russia agreed to help Bangladesh with not only just supplying all the constructing equipment, technology and facilities but also a huge loan that is now contributing the project and slowly coming to appear in reality. For This Bangladesh will be forever thankful to Russia. A lot of Russian citizens and engineers has come to Bangladesh to work in this project and they are now living in Rooppur village with the local people there and they are in a great bond with each other in terms of understanding and respecting each other’s cultures.

The Cost and The Place

The nuclear power plant is being constructed at Rooppur of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna District, on the bank of the river Padma, 87 miles west of Dhaka. According to Dhaka Tribune the project’s construction cost, including for training manpower, amounts to $12.65 billion US Dollars, and 90% of it is being funded by Russia. As this is a nuclear power plant, this has a huge risk on nature and the environment in that area and because of that a lot of safety measurements has been taken around the project so that no matter what happens it can not affect the environment and the lives in that area.

The Features and The Productivity

This Power Plant will produce a sufficient supply of electricity and energy to power up the entire country and increase the value of the economy as well. The power plant will produce huge amount of electricity which will take very little amount of fuelling. A little amount of Uranium can produce so high energy that it’s literally considered a magic conversion. When the project is complete it will be able to generate 2.4 GWₑ or 1,200 MW of electricity which is unthinkable in a country like Bangladesh.

The Potential Opportunities

Though it has a lot of risks and health hazards, the 3rd generation of advance radiation absorbing materials and the technology can give the safety assurance for everything. When this project will be finished it’s going to need a tons of tons of maintenance, controlling units and researching activities. For which it will create lots of job sectors and employment opportunities. Thus the people of Bangladesh will get benefited from every angle and every way possible at different directions, Boosting the economy to it’s Maximum capacity and give the country the best way to repay it’s loan given by Russia.
