Hallyu or the Korean Wave is the dramatic global rise in popularity of South Korean popular culture since the 1990s, initiated by then-President Kim Dae Jung during the country’s economic recovery following the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s. Nowadays, it has gained significant influence among today’s generation. The influence of this popular culture can be seen in various fields such as fashion, beauty and food. The music industry and entertainment industry are no exception.
Korean music industry also known as K-pop is one of the reasons why Korean culture is popular among the today’s generation and it is a global phenomenon. During the lockdown period, K-pop broke all language barriers and cultural barriers, becoming more popular because of its unique style, genius approaches to the music videos, talented artist, great choreography and hard work and has earned a special place in the hearts of today’s generation. Due to their strong fan base, K-pop groups like BTS, EXO, TXT, Blackpink, Twice have broken several world records in short period of time. For example, Bangtan Sonyeonda as known as BTS, hold the record for the most-viewed YouTube video in 24hours with their music video “Butter”. Also, the first song to reach 1 billion views on YouTube was “Gangnan Style” by Psy. Moreover, because of K-pop young people are showing interest in Korean culture including food, language and history. Korean drama or K-drama is a significant reason behind the Hallyu. K-drama has a notable impact on today’s generation owing to their unique storylines, actors and high-quality production values. They show love, family relationships, friendship in their dramas as well as their culture, Korean tourist attraction, which has helped to promote tourism and create a strong bond in a family. Furthermore, watching K-drama can be quite relaxing. In conclusion, we can say K-pop and K-drama are one of the
main factors behind the global popularity of South Korean culture among today’s
generation.
